The Puyallup and Spokan Tribes

There were three basic needs of the Puyallup tribe, decent food, warm shelter, and some suitable clothing. The word "Puyallup" means generous people. The Puyallups were located where modern Tacoma is, but a neighboring town was named after the tribe.

Needs

The Puyallup Tribe were hunters and gatherers. The men would fish for salmon, while the women would gather various plants and berries for food. The Puyallups dodged from the pouring, west coast rain in their warm, cedar longhouses. These longhouses could be up to 100 ft long and were made from thick cedar planks. They were designed with low roofs so they would be easy to heat. During the summer time, the men wore breech cloths. The women would wear cedar bark aprons and skirts. During the winter weather, both genders would cover themselves with beautiful woven blankets. On these blankets the women would sew beautiful designs from seashells. The men would also wear leggings, while the women would wear skirts, and moccasins on their feet when it got too cold to walk around barefoot.

Want

There were many things that the Puyallup Tribe wanted but I must say their main want was to throw potlatches. Potlatches were thrown for many reasons including (but not limited to) when deaths occurred, weddings were celebrated, when someone became of age (when they are considered an adult or an elder of the tribe), when a longhouse had been finished, or just because the host would like to show their higher social status. During the Potlatches there would be feasts, singing and dancing, games, and boasting about wealth. The potlatches could last from as short two days, to as long as two weeks! The host would always give something to everyone in the tribe.

Spokan Tribe

As with the Puyallup tribe the Spokan* tribe also had three basic needs, substantial food, secure shelter, and appropriate clothing.

"Soon there will come from the rising sun a different kind of man from any you have yet seen, who will bring with them a book and will teach you everything." ~Spokan Prophet

*The spokan tribe can be spelled with or without the e both ways are correct*

Needs

The Spokan tribe, like most Plateau Native Americans in Washington state, dug for roots like camas and picked berries. They also fished for salmon and other fish in the columbia river and its tributaries. Whenever the Spokan tribe would hunt they would use a bow and arrow, they would often hunt small game, but rely on the roots and berries along with salmon. As with anyone, the Spokan tribe needed shelter. The teepees that the Spokan tribe used for shelter were described as "circular dwellings placed over shallow pits and constructed out of pole frames with grass or woven-mat coverings." As for clothing in the winter months everyone would wear clothes made of buffalo, elk, and deer hides. Moccasins were worn year round and by both men and women. For the rest of the year the men would wear long buckskin shirts, and breechclothes, while the women would wear long dresses. Both genders wore leggings, belts, hats, and like I said before, moccasins.sometimes fur hats and like I said before moccasins.

Want

Of the many wants that the Spokan tribe had I believe that the tribe wanted Pow wows most are at least more than other things. Pow wows are like potlatches and still exist. They are celebrations where people come to dance, sing, socialize and honor the native american culture. The pow wows can last from five hours up to a week long. The people of the Spokan tribe would wear special clothing just for special occasions like Pow wows. The want of a celebration like a pow wow was probably very important to the people of the tribe as back then there weren't many things to do for fun, almost everything was out of necessity.
